Ode to the New Year

'Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).

I'd remember the marvellous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I'd never said, 'No thank you, please.'

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt
I said to myself, as I only can
'You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!'

So - away with the last of the sour cream dip,
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
'Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie - not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore
But isn't that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

Heaven in 2011

OMG, if the guy on the treadmill next to me said"heaven in 2011" one more time to everyone who walked into the gym, I was going to blow my first New Year's Resolution of more patience:-) Whether you call them resolutions, goals, promises, commitments, do you set them and forget them? This year will be "different", yuk, yuk, yuk... No, really!
I call them goals not resolutions and here are the answers...forgiveness and choice. Each year, I make them, some I achieve, some I don't, I forgive my trespasses. So I didn't make that size 6 last year, I celebrated the 8. So I didn't make numbers of dollars, pounds, dates I wanted but it's OK, I choose and that's the operative word, CHOOSE to celebrate all that is good and all that I HAVE achieved. Failure may not be an option but it's a reality, a human frailty but not to be disgraced but to be acknowledged. The ol' cliche and fact as well...Edison had more failures than successes before he got to the light bulb, Babe Ruth had more strike outs before becoming the home run king. So before I moan and groan that I broke my resolutions or didn't achieve all my goals, I'm just gonna enjoy a li'l slice of heaven in 2011.

Movie Madness

Movie Reviews: The Good, The Strange & The Chick Flicks

Ah the holidays! Movies, eat, movies, eat, movies... Yes, there were gifts and traditions and much laughter and joy but oh those movies. So you know I saw "Black Swan" being the dancer I am but psycho-sexual gory thrillers are not what I go to the ballet for. Then there was the proverbial chick flick "How Do You Know". I know this is not worth seeing as I am the queen of chick flicks and well, let's just say, this does not meet the ultra high standards of most, kidding, kidding. OK, so let's try "The Tourist" with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. I actually really liked this movie. I'm not sure why everyone is so ga ga for Depp when I couldn't take my eyes off the spectacular beauty of Jolie...and I'm not gay. Then capped off the holidays with "The Kids Are Alright", speaking of gay, it's about a Lesbian couple and their family and was a fabulous movie with Annette Bening and what's her name, oh for Pete's sake, look it up, I'm too tired to, I've watched too many movies and eaten too much food.
